I was recently watching the Men's USA basketball team playing a game and I saw Kevin Durant in

My question is, how is it that Kevin Durant is in or should I say participating on the US Men's basketball team when he has not played one single professional basketball game. The guy was just drafted, he doesn't deserve to be on the US team just yet. I dont think its fair. There are other players in the NBA that are far more deserving to be on that team such as Tony Parker, but instead, the league chooses a player that is just recently drafted and has yet to play ONE NBA game??? Im not understanding that.

The U.S.A. Basketball Team always want to have a mixture of NBA stars along withcollegestars or NBA rookies. By playing them together, we're setting the stage for the future when current NBA stars get old and thecollegestars or rookies back then settle into their star status. It's kind of like an NBA team that has features a lot of young talent (think Charlotte Bobcats, Chicago Bulls, or Boston Celtics) but they need a veteran player with playoff experience to guide them. The newbies can learn from the playoff tested veterans so they can sharpen and enhance their skills. Let's not forget that the Olympics isn't not a one year commitment. It goes on every couple of years and you'll be constantly adding new players each time. Having past rookies orcollegeplayers who were formerly on past teams minimizes the need to retrain certain players and allows the team more time to gel and execute the offensive / defensive system to it's maximum capacity.

All that matters is that he is from the U.S. and the other person is right Tony Parker is from France, and would therefor play for France. Another example is Yow Ming playing for China, as well as Yi Jianlian, Manu Ginobli is playing for Argentina, etc. Greg Oden has been added to the USA Team as well. The USA coach could pick some guys from And 1 to be on the team if he wanted to as long as they are from the U.S.
Kevin Durant is an American so he should be allowed to play. Right now he has not made the final roster and they are still determining who will be on the final team. If you watched the same exhibition I watched you felt good about Durant being there because he was throwing down and playing hard. It might also be better because he just came fromcollegeand has not been corrupted by the money of the NBA game and he will be coacheable and give 100% effort.
tony parker is from france
USA Basketball likes to invite younger players to participate so that their training carries over. It is not strictly for NBA players, as they will occasionally invite acollegeplayer to participate. There are currently 32 players on the US team. Another 15, including the also recently drafted Greg Oden, were unable to participate in the recent training camp due to injuries or other commitments. Only 12 players will be on the roster sent to the Tournament of the Americas next month to qualify the team for next year's Olympics in Beijing.

As you saw in the game, though, Durant scored 22 points and clearly has no trouble playing at this level. I would not be surprised if he makes the team since he has good mid-range scoring skills, can rebound, and can be trained for the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

As others have mentioned, Tony Parker, Dirk Nowizki, and Steve Nash are not American citizens and thus not eligible for the U.S. Men's Senior National Team.
The USA b-ball team is currently playing scrimmage games in Las Vegas where the NBA summer league takes place, you'll get to see players from all over the NBA going up against the USA team. Durant might just be on a team that played the USA team or is just getting practice with the USA I don't think he's actually on the team. Most likely Tony Parker will play for France along with other NBA players from France. Also keep in mind that many veteran players don't like playing during the summer, that's why the USA team get maily young players, their the only one's who want to play.
Well, Kevin Durant is from the USA and he is assigned to a NBA team. And a lot of the stars in basketball either choose not to play because they don't wanna get injured or there isn't enough cash. And some of the stars aren't from the USA, like Tony Parker. Not only did he just get married, he'd be playing for the french team.
Well idk why KD is on the team. he shouldn't be. however there are a lot of pro nba players who don't want to play for the usa basketball team cause they're worried about security an stuff. so they might have asked him to cause they couldn't get enough of the good pros to.
Kevin Durant is able to play because any collegiate player(s) who perform outstandingly and get drafted to the NBA are invited to play by the coach of the U.S. basketball team
Well that comes from his play in thecollegeranks. He will be joined by Greg Oden too, once he returns from his tonsil situation. the same thing occurred on the "Original Dream Team", where Christian Laetner (excuse my spelling) and anothercollegeplayer was on the roster. It's an ok thing, it allows them to get some professional competition experience. Besides, it is not like he'll get much run with the talent that the U.S. has already, but hey someone has to sit the bench (quietly) so I all for it.

P.S. The U.S. better win this tourney, and the 08 Olympics
