Well both are Eastern teams... so it couldnt be recent. I have only been following sports since the 80's, I'm guessing it had to be when there were only 5 teams in their league if and when it did happen.

1938 Cubs got swept by the Yankees. And again in 1932. Then there was the 1917 White Sox who beat the New York Giants in the world series.
Neither the bulls, bears or blackhawks have played in a championship game against a new york team.
